In June 2021, lockdown in Dublin eased, and people took to the streets to party. For me, it felt like the perfect time to record people on the streets, enjoying their freedom with friends and family.
Street photography has always had a special place in my work, since creating Humans of Dublin back in 2013. The possibility of being able to capture a moment in time that will not replicated ever again is an incredible feeling. I love the expressions, the human interaction, quirky fashion, small cues and subtleties in body language, and hidden gems on the street that we might not see with our eyes day to day. My recent night-time flash street photography work, allows me to capture people’s ‘true authentic self’ in a world where people only want to present their ideal self through social media. This approach on the streets has been greeted by fear, sometimes aggression but mostly gratitude and appreciation.
RISE OF THE STREETS Issue 1 is the beginning of a series documenting this candid street photography work. Black and white photographs printed on uncoated 100% recycled A5 paper, the zine incorporates a rough and ready feel.
